That’s The Wentletrap Wonder…. The Mini-shell Master…. The Shelling Superman…uhhh, ok, it’s just my husband, Clark, shelling for the mini shells. But we found 61 WENTLETRAPS this afternoon! And lots of other really good minis. We always find a lot of BUBBLE shells but this one was a little unusual- it’s an ANTILLES GLASSY BUBBLE. It is so paper thin that it’s see-through.
We ended up finding (and keeping) 4 more BABY’S EARS, a bright orange baby HORSE CONCH, WORM SHELLS, PEAR WHELKS, a bright orange FALSE DRILL, 2 FLORIDA CONES and of course our 61 WENTLETRAPS.
Can you guess who was back at the Lighthouse too? “Flipper”, that crazy dolphin!
We found tons of minis last October. Not many larger shells at all. I’m hoping for some bigger specimens this October! Plus, we love the dolphin show!!
Please tell me where to buy one of those shelling scoops, can I buy one on the island? The little shells are so pretty too.
Bailey’s Hardware normally has a good selection of nets and these metal baskets. A smaller net is actually better for the wentletraps…they are a little easier to snag little shells quickly.
Thank you so much,I didn’t know who to ask and for weeks wondering where to buy one.
Hi there, I came across you blog with blog surfing! I have recently moved to Florida and know absolutely nothing about shells, but love finding them on the beach. I am not having much luck here on the ocean side right now!
You have a great blog…Shell (my name!)
Handsome fellow collecting shells. I’d love to see the dolphin show. They are so neat1 I’m learning so much about the names of shells from your blog. thanks.
I crave those wentletraps – as you approach to walk on the pier, are you looking to the right or the left? I’ve shelled there for years and have never seen them, but for my next trip I will sharpen my eyes!
If you are at the steps to the pier, start walking to the right. I have found them on the other side of the pier as well but lately, we’ve had better luck on the right side. Good luck!
Hi Pam. When was the last time you were here shelling? I was fortunate enough to be in a cruise to Cayo Costa with you quite a few years ago and had the best time. I will be in the neighborhood in a few weeks and am wondering if all the same hot spots are still in play.
