Beautiful Buried Treasures
Posted by: | CommentsGabriel found this live STARFISH (BROWN SPINY SEA STAR) on a PEN SHELL at low tide late this morning at the Sanibel Lighthouse beach. His whole family came over to look at it and to ohhh and ahhh so I had to find out what the fuss was about. It’s just beautiful, isn’t it? Yes, I mean the STARFISH is beautiful but also to hear the excitement and amazement of finding life and treasures that come from the sea. That’s beautiful too.
It was such a pleasure to meet this family! They were trying to learn the names of all the shells they were finding so I was thrilled to help them. This was our best find…. an ALPHABET CONE that was semi buried in the sand.
I don’t have photos of all the shells we were finding but here are some of the shell they found that I help identify…
Oh how I’ve missed my walks at the lighthouse beach on Sanibel. Ever since the day light savings time change, I’ve been discombobulated. I like my walks with Clark in the evening but now it gets dark too early for me to wait until he gets home from his office. But now after meeting such an amazing family on the beach today, it got me right in my beach combing time zone again. Here are a couple of my finds….
Most of my finds today were half buried in the sand like this half buried perfect ANGEL WING.
This LIGHTNING WHELK was perfectly empty too but I almost missed it since only this much of it was showing. More buried treasure.
This morning started off my weekend with a smile so I hope I can pass it along to you too. Have a great weekend!
Turkey Wings and Rice, a Cone and Candy
Posted by: | CommentsDon’t get your taste buds all worked up about TURKEY, RICE or CANDY because I’m talking seashells, of course! We found lots of mini “morsels” at the lighthouse over the weekend including these two TURKEY WINGS (the biggest one is only about an inch long) and two TAMPA TURRIDS in the photo above and RICE OLIVES and BABY’S EARS in this next photo.
Along with the usual ANGULATE WENTLETRAPS, I found a BROWN BANDED WENTLETRAP too….
…. And some AUGERS and little FIGHTING CONCHS.
And to top it all off with some sweet candy, we found two HORSE CONCHS and baby ALPHABET CONE.
I met William and Melissa (Jacksonville, FL) filling their shells bags with SCALLOP shells, CONCHS and some MUREXES.
I found out this was their first trip to Sanibel so I showed them how to find WENTLETRAPS too..
I met another Shelling Sister Sanibel Stooper on the beach too…. this little cutie Lucy! She was having a ball with this COCKLE shell on the beach with her parents Jeff and Tammy.
And look what I found again…. a SMOOTH DUCK CLAM. Maybe it isn’t that unusual (?)
Unfortunately, it’s so thin and fragile, it broke when I got it back to the house……oops!
There were so many SAILOR’S EARS, I bunched a few together and that’s when I saw the SMOOTH DUCK CLAM too.

Colors of the Rainbow
Posted by: | CommentsWe left the beach empty handed tonight but as you see it was beautiful on the east end of Sanibel……although, I heard more than once that last night was even more beautiful. Several people told me that as the sun was setting, the full moon was rising over the water AND at the same time……a rainbow! Really??? We missed it!
Local artist Luc and Dee from Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation told me about the sky we missed last night and that they found a live ALPHABET CONE last night too right around the same area we were standing. So lo and behold, as I was wading through the water to catch up with Clark to leave…..I saw a live alphabet cone. It had to be the same one.
You can barely see him but I saw his tracks in the shallow water so I knew he was alive. I picked him up (they aren’t poisonous) only long enough to take the picture and show Clark then put him back where we found him. That was like finding a needle in a haystack to find the same cone! It makes me feel a little better about missing the moon and rainbow show last night (just a little).

She Decorates with Seashells
Posted by: | CommentsAUGERS must inspire creativity. My friend Jane got inspired to make these auger rings to surround her candles……but wait…..there’s more. Jane only needs a little inspiration because her creative juices start flowing just looking at any type of shell she picks up on the beach.
She picked up this box at a second hand store and covered the lid with PEN SHELLS and OLIVES for the handle. She uses hot glue to keep everything together and she says she rarely has problems with them falling off. If they do? She hot glues them right back on.
Lots of people ask how they can display their shells. Did you ever think of making a mermaid picture? Me neither, but Jane did. She used WHELK casings for the mermaid’s hair and pen shells for her scales. Adorable!
She designed left-over tile pieces in the shape of Sanibel and surrounded it with small white shells (mostly clam shells) and added bits and pieces of red CALICO SCALLOP shells where the red mangroves are around Tarpon Bay.
She puts her nicer shells in glass vessels and adds SEA FANS.
Of course all of her best finds go into a special display, the Best Box.
She adds shells to any shelf to make it feel like home.
If she finds an olive shell without a tip, she keeps it to make olive garland for her chandeliers and Christmas tree.
Her husband collects the unusual beach treasure while they walk on the beach. Bones of any type and TURKEY WINGS are his favorites. Whatever makes you happy, right? Hahaha No, really those bones are pretty cool.
This is just a SMALL sampling of the art Jane creates. I havent even shown her frames. I’ll have to save those for another post. Here’s a sample…want more?
Auger Art
Posted by: | CommentsCan you believe this is the track of an AUGER in the sand? There was a whole area on the beach where augers were making curly Qs and squiggly cirles before they would dig themselves under the sand. I couldn’t get over that each one was a piece of art in itself. So when I wanted to find something blue and red to “shellebrate” July 4th, I thought I’d embellish the art that the augers had started by changing the color of the sand on my computer. To begin, this is what an AUGER shell looks like……
Then when they are alive, they make theses tracks in the sand like this….
Cool, huh? Then I tinted the whole picture.
This was my red contribution for Independence day. I had so much fun, I kept going with more and more auger art.
I can’t tell you how happy ya’ll have made me by all of your comments on my post for the Nick Adam’s Photo Giveaway . I can’t wait to pick a winner! This is so much fun! We still have until the 15th to give others a chance to sign up since it has been a holiday weekend……. but I’m already so anxious to draw a name.
