Another Huge Horse Conch, Angel Wing Too
Posted by: | CommentsThese are just a few shells that were in Jonathan and Kelly’s shell bucket yesterday at the lighthouse beach. That ALPHABET CONE was about 2 1/2 inches long and the ANGEL WING was around 5 1/2 inches. Do you know how hard it is to find a whole angel wing so large at that beach? Actually, Jonathan said it wasn’t on the beach. He said they were out in the water waist to chest high digging around. Want to see what else they found there a few days earlier?
Wow! It still has that dark color underneath those barnacles. He was hoping most of those barnacles would pop off with a little soaking when they get home to Kentucky. I’m hoping he’ll send an “after” picture when it gets cleaned up. This was the 2nd time shelling…… do you think they’re gonna be hooked?
There were all sorts of goodies washing in! Everybody was finding treasure.
And last but not least…. Dear friends Gabie and Grace from Miami with their hands filled with shells found on the beach at Sundial Resort. Aren’t they sooooo cute?
Ready. Set. Get Shelling!
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s crazy at Blind Pass! If you were quick, you could snatch OLIVES, WHELKS, CONCHS, MUREXES and on and on…..just about everything! I’m just going to show you pictures of this afternoon first….then I’ve got some other surprises.
When we got home this evening after dinner and a movie with friends, I opened my computer to download the pictures from today when I got a new email (at 9:16 pm) from my good friend Ellen that said Nighttime blind pass angel wing. Whoa! She had her head lamp on and was at Blind Pass with her sister-in-law Deb shelling away!
I can’t believe that an ANGEL WING survived in that rough surf there….but wait..there’s more. At 9:19pm I got another email. WOW! Check it out!
I immediately showed Clark the picture. He changed clothes and said “I’ve got to go”. Twenty minutes later, we were right beside Ellen and Deb with flashlights in hand laughing like school kids.

Ellen's angel wing, nice horse conch, tulips, fig, flat, whelks, conchs and worm shell in her shell bag
We found an ANGEL WING too and I got a nice ALPHABET CONE. If you are on Sanibel, get to the beach tomorrow- it’s still going to be good! We will be there bright and early (and I’m so not a morning person but for this, I think I can be persuaded).
Commingling Memories
Posted by: | CommentsIt was Cindy’s last day at Casa Ybel Resort so she was shelling as much of the daylight possible before she has to go back to Minnesota tomorrow. She had found a tiny OLIVE and a few bright orange iridescent JINGLES. She mentioned that she had found many different colors of JINGLES throughout the week including black, grey, white and yellow and lots of other wonderful shells.
Cindy’s sister Mary wanted to show me all of the shells that they had collected over the week and invited me to their condo that they had rented together along with their husbands. On their screened in porch just steps from the beach, they had a whole table filled with all kinds of great shells. Mary pointed out that there was a clear line right down the middle of the table……on the left side of the table were only Mary’s shells. On the right side…..Cindy’s shells. “There will be no commingling of shells” they both said. Haha! Love it!
It looks like they both did pretty well finding FIGHTING CONCHS, OLIVES, lots of those gorgeous bright JINGLES, KITTEN’S PAWS, COCKLES, SCALLOPS, CLAMS, ANGEL WINGS (wow! They are hard to find intact), WHELKS, TURKEY WINGS, AUGERS, COQUINAS, TULIPS, MAUREXES and a little candy corn HORSE CONCH.
These sisters might not be commingling shells but they will be “commingling” memories of this incredible week that they said they’ve had on Sanibel. And thanks for inviting me to visit your showcase of shells!
Beach Seeding?

Huge Scallop shells
I debated on putting this picture in my blog. I thought I might feel foolish if I found out that someone had just thrown them out in the water to be funny. All four of these four and a half inch SCALLOPS were found the same time as the other shells and coral on post Crazy Shelling at Lighthouse . When Clark and I found these, we both looked around for anybody on the beach laughing or looking at us and we both said to each other “Do you think someone seeded the beach?”. We’ve heard of people throwing really nice shells (that are store bought) on the beach just to see the reaction of a sheller getting excited when they pick it up. We call this “seeding” the beach.

4 inch orange Tellin
We looked in our shell books to see if they are local but didn’t find that our local SCALLOPS get that big. We are convinced that because we found the piece of round CORAL, the huge ANGEL WING, a four inch orange TELLIN (pictured left), and the other rare-ish shells, Hurricane Ida must have really stirred a different brew from who knows where.
We are tickled that we found such different shells. You just never know what Mother Nature might put in front of you.

Shells from the Lighthouse
That ANGEL WING that Clark found is 6 1/2 inches long!!
We were walking along the shoreline around 5pm not seeing much (thinking that we should have gone back to Blind Pass) when all the sudden I saw 2 ALPHABET CONES, a HORSE CONCH, a TRUE TULIP and a NUTMEG that just washed up. Clark raced over and found 4 big WHELKS, the jumbo ANGEL WING in the picture, the large ALPHABET CONE and that really incredible round piece of CORAL the size of a baseball.
We were both surprised that very few people were out shelling. I heard that yesterday someone found a JUNONIA at the Lighthouse point so where was everybody? Because it was a little chilly? Really?
